ダーウィンの進化論を拡張し、生物形態学の全体像を理論的に再構築しようとした19世紀最大の形態学書。1866年に刊行されたエルンスト・ヘッケル『一般形態学（Generelle Morphologie der Organismen）』は、進化論を体系的な近代生物学へと組み込もうとした最初の大著である。本書においてヘッケルは、個体発生・系統発生・分類体系・形態理論を一つの枠組みの中で統合し、生命の多様性と複雑化を階層構造として理解しようと試みた。いわゆる反復説（生物発生原則）もこの書物で初めて体系的に提示されたが、『一般形態学』は反復説のみで語られる書物ではない。ここで展開されるのは、生物を「形態」「個体」「系統」の三つの観点から統一的に理解しようとする壮大な理論構築であり、近代進化生物学の思想的基盤の一つとなった試みである。本書は長らく引用によってのみ知られ、ドイツ語以外ではほとんど読まれてこなかった。本訳は、この古典の全体像を日本語で提示することを目的とする。原文の概念体系と論理構造を可能な限り保持するため、訳文は逐語翻訳を基本とし、用語もできる限り一貫して再現した。進化生物学史、形態学史、発生学史を研究する読者のみならず、生命科学の思想的背景を知るための基本文献である。 Read more
